Buyer Guide
What MOQ makes sense for custom paper packaging projects?
By BLF Packaging · Published · Updated
There is no single production MOQ for every custom paper box. Structure, material, printing, finish, insert and project conditions must be reviewed together. An order quantity suitable for one folding carton may not suit a rigid gift set with several components.
BLF prioritizes well-specified projects from 500 pcs. This describes project-priority fit, not a universal production MOQ. Lower quantities may still be reviewed based on repeat potential and overall project fit.
Separate three quantity decisions
| Decision | What it means | What to provide |
|---|---|---|
| Production MOQ | Feasible minimum for the agreed construction and components | Structure, size, material, printing, finishes and insert |
| Order quantity | Number needed for this launch, restock or gift program | Quantity per size or artwork version, rather than only a combined total |
| Repeat planning | Possible follow-up demand, which is not a confirmed order | Expected reorder pattern and which specifications may stay the same |
Why a smaller run can cost more per box
Artwork preparation, tooling, print setup, die cutting and assembly preparation happen before a run is complete. A smaller order shares that preparation across fewer boxes. Additional sizes, artwork versions, inserts and special finishes can introduce separate work.
Ask for comparable quantity options using the same specification. A lower unit price on a larger run should also be weighed against storage, total spend and the risk of artwork or product changes.
Prepare a quantity review brief
- Product dimensions and the number of items per pack.
- Quantity per box size and artwork version, plus any expected reorder range.
- Preferred structure, insert and finish; identify options you can simplify.
- Target market and launch date, with a clear distinction between required arrival and dispatch.
